Not long ago we purchased dining room chairs from IKEA. One of the ways they keep costs down is to have you assemble things yourself. There is a downside, though - you have to assemble them yourself.
After I tightened the last connector with the included hex wrench (I now have eight) something didn't seem quite right. The chair was rock solid, but the front legs were pointed up instead of down. I actually didn't notice this until Robyn graciously pointed it out. Then she ran to get the camera. In true missionary fashion, I decided that just about anything is fair game for a newsletter, and what good is messing up if you can't turn it into an object lesson?
So here goes: Things I learned while assembling a chair.
|
1. Sometimes we get so caught up in the details that we don't keep the big picture in mind.
If I had backed up about 6 inches I would have noticed my mistake.
2. Doing a task well doesn't mean we are getting the job done.
The fastener was tightened very well, but no one would ever be able to eat paella sitting on that chair.
3. Mistakes are great teachers.
All the rest of the chairs turned out just fine.
4 We need to let other people evaluate our work.
We can never totally remove our biases from what we do.
5 Wives are good evaluators. Listen to your wife.
(I think this is a lesson that keeps re-appearing)

I can make beautiful or moving videos, but if in the end they don't connect to people where they experience life, and draw them to Jesus, the videos are pointless.
We changed the format of a current video project because of some outside input. What we thought was a great idea was actually counter-productive from a church-planting perspective. This set us back a bit, but the extra time spent will be worthwhile.
We recently taped footage for some music videos. I thought everything was great until I tried to edit the first one. Lots of shots were too shaky, and I didn't have enough of the the right kind. I thought it was well planned, but now I know better what to do. I didn't know what I really needed until I dove in and make mistakes. Fortunately the second music video has very useful footage.
In the spirit of listening to other people, you might have insights to offer as well.
I would love to hear your thoughts.
We need to wring every last drop of wisdom from such a silly mistake.

Prayer Items
Sandra Prieto, a lady who has worked with us in the past, and is currently writing the script for our mini-documentary on Evangelicals in Spain, was diagnosed with colon cancer. Fortunately it is just localized. Pray for her healing, and that she will handle the radiation and chemotherapy well.
We need two actresses for a piece on family relationships. We also still need to find a couple of people to speak in the intro to our segment on depression.
Pray that we can find Spanish young people to help produce a series of 30 second videos designed to spark spiritual conversations on social networking sites.
Pray that the people we find to help will grow in their faith, be challenged to reach Spain for Christ, or desire to know Him because of their involvement in these projects.
Pray for wisdom as we raise our children. Pray especially for Robyn. Our two cute little daughters are quite a handful.
Our neighbor Jose's father is near death. Pray that this will make him reflect on his own spiritual condition.

Thanks for praying.
We are well aware that only the Holy Spirit can convice Spaniards of their need of a Savior, but we want to be useful tools in His hands.
In Christ,
